HAES Australia was started by a group of passionate and diverse individuals. Our aim is to provide a place on the web to help connect consumers to reliable practitioners of HAES® and the Non-diet approach. All of us are most definitely far more than our looks or our weight.
So just how diverse is this group?
Well between just nine of us, who live in four different states, we have 19 university degrees, 7 certificate level qualifications, and three of us are completing additional degrees. We have all been in love, some of us are married and some of us are divorced. There are 15 children, various pets, husbands, and partners. Four of us have recovered from an eating disorder. We have collectively travelled to over 90 countries, some of us have even lived overseas and one of us was born overseas. We play 8 instruments, two of us started ballet later in life and one of us has been a national gymnast. Two of us have been homeless for a period of time. Four of us are published authors. Impressively one of us has saved a life and another helped catch a prisoner. Depending on your perspective, it's impressive that two of us know all the words to the Rocky Horror Picture show! There have been some who have received or been nominated for awards, with one very recent nomination. A couple do marathons and Tough Mudder, one has done a burlesque course, one has had a stroke and a heart attack. Surprisingly one of us lived on the same street as Mick Jagger, while another dated a famous soccer player - sorry no names or details! One of us speaks French, one has a learning disorder, and another has been a model. Most of us have been in the media in some capacity, including local and national papers, 60 Minutes, Insight, Catalyst, The Feed, The Living Room, and Mornings. We all like chocolate.
All of us run our own successful businesses. A few of us are or have been tertiary lecturers. Most of us run courses, workshops, and trainings, and spoken at conferences to students, practitioners, and the public. This translates to thousands of people in Australia and overseas.
Importantly, our collective years in practice is approaching 100 and many of those years have been as a HAES practitioners.
Of course, the way we look won't tell you any of this, because we are #morethanmylooks - and so are you. We would love to see your #morethanmylooks pic or hear your wonderful wild stories too.
It's so exciting to have finally created HAES Australia and we are excited to have you join us. I'm Kerry and I get to do the first post..We are a very passionate group of health professionals who connected and have become firm friends and colleagues in working and promoting the HAES® and Non Diet approach here in Australia. The next logical step was of course to make it a little bit more formal and ta da HAES Australia was born. Over the next few weeks you will get to meet us all as we take turns sharing our thoughts with you.
So how did we get here and how did we meet?
I'm not entirely sure, but what I do know is that in the HAES® community there is a lot of sharing, generousity, support and collaboration plus it's a small world so it's inevitable that paths of awesome like-minded people eventually cross. We are all qualified health professionals from various disciplines with a shared passion for getting this message out to the world. Most of us have met in person at various events and trainings and we have just as much fun as we do online with maybe a bit more wine and chocolate. Some of us offer training in HAES® and the NonDiet approach. For at least a year we have been sharing, collaborating, laughing and encouraging each other online daily. We talk through issues and frustrations, debate ideas and hold each other to a higher standard with just enough teasing and joking to make it a safe space to retreat against the crazy of daily life.
One of our biggest and almost daily frustration is the misinformation that exists. So HAES Australia is a way to tackle these issues. To be a place that people, practitioners and the public can go to for information and resources that is informed, accurate and importantly safe.
Our approach is to be proactive in educating the public, media and practitioners about HAES®, the NonDiet approach as well as other topics that link in. Especially topics related to weight loss & dieting, disordered eating & eating disorders, nutrition, health, mental health and exercise within our area of expertise. We also aim to work towards bringing awareness to factors that impact an individuals health and expand on our current links to other organisations that are working to effect change.
All our team is available for media, corporate or organisation talks to achieve this purpose.
Thanks and until next time
Kerry and all the excited team at HAES Australia.
